The 6,000 s.f., 10-bed Burn Center was located for direct
ambulance access to the helipad. To provide maximum patient
observation and accessibility by nursing staff, the unit was
planned in a triangular form with a central nurses' station
surrounded by patient rooms. Nursing and patient support services
were located axially for ease of access from the major triangular
circulation paths.
The
floating canopy over the nurses' station was designed to conceal
existing piping, accommodating indirect general illumination
and to create an illusion of a higher ceiling height. Task
lighting is achieved through decorative recessed down lights
over the nurses' station and indirect circular fixtures defining
patient rooms.
