Substance Abuse
Staten Island university Hospital

This project is a relocation and expansion of an existing Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program to a new 7,500 s.f. three-story structure. The building, designed to welcome patients and accommodate new program needs, ties into an existing building linking the programs on various floors with a new elevator to accommodate disabled patients. It houses a four-position dispensing station, 12 counseling offices, two group rooms for patient education, an exam room, staff lounge and support functions. The interior finishes selections, including patterned tile, carpet and wood in a colorful scheme, provide a calming and warming effect.

Attached to a 1930's former Nurses' residence, the new building has a brick exterior with cast stone lintels, sills and cornice complementing the existing building. The use of 6-over-6 double-hung windows maintains the residential appearance of the building addressing neighborhood concerns with the project.
